SYNOPSIS: Perhaps the most widely-loved and hilarious of Gilbert and Sullivans Savoy Operas, this classic production by Opera Australia creates a fantastical, imaginary Japan.    

With amazingly detailed sets, lavish costumes and a fabulous cast astutely directed by Stuart Maunder, this comic operetta sparkles from beginning to end. The music is pure joy, with an amazing performance drawn from Orchestra Victoria by the superb conductor Brian Castles-Onion.

SYNOPSIS: Verdi’s hugely popular La Traviata returns to the Sydney Harbour water stage featuring a breath-taking soaring nine metre high, 3.5 ton chandelier covered in 10,000 shimmering Swarovski crystals. This glamorous production was captured on location on Sydney Harbour in 2021 in front of a sold out audience. La Traviata features timeless romantic arias, lively choreography, beautiful costumes and spectacular fireworks.

DON PASQUALE

SYNOPSIS: Don Pasquale, an elderly miser, takes it into his head to disinherit his uppity nephew Ernesto who is in love with Norina, by marrying and producing an heir. He asks his doctor to find him a suitable match. A marriage contract is hastily drawn up by the cunning Dr Malatesta between Don Pasquale and Malatesta’s ‘sister’ (the disguised Norina).  With the ink barely dry, the shy and demure bride begins to create so much havoc that the groom is only too happy to pay to get rid of her. And so ensues much merriment and misadventure until the time-honoured reversal of fortune at the end when Don Pasquale gives the young couple his blessing.

LAKME

SYNOPSIS: Starring the exquisite coloratura soprano Emma Matthews as the innocent girl priestess Lakmé, and superb tenor Aldo Di Toro as the love-struck Gerald, the story tackles religion and cross-cultural love against a backdrop of British rule in India in the mid-19th century. French conductor Emmanuel Joel-Hornak brings out the full depth of the lush, dramatic score, with familiar high points being the beautiful renditions of the well-known Flower Duet and Bell Song.

RIGOLETTO

SYNOPSIS: This stage production from the 2010 Sydney Opera House finds the Opera Australia and Elijah Moshinsky reinterpreting Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto as a journey into the underworld, visually inspired by Fellini's La Dolce Vita. Alan Opie performs the title role, with Emma Matthews as Gilda and Paul O'Neill as the Duke. Giovanni Reggioli conducts; The Opera Australia Chorus and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra lend accompaniment.
